Around 1919, Gerrit Rietveld designed his most famous piece of furniture: a slatted armchair he would later paint red and blue. The first version in uncoloured wood was illustrated in De Stijl magazine. The transverse slats are a signature feature. The purity of this construction appealed to the many architects and artists among Rietveld’s first clients, including the writer Til Brugman.
