The Voorstraat Harbour in Dordrecht, Willem Witsen, 1898
Witsen was the master of the tranquil city view. In Amsterdam and Dordrecht he painted the old houses along the canals from a boat. He did this with a real passion for detail, seen here, for instance, in the worn bricks and the terracotta pots in the windowsills. By suppressing any signs of life and recession into depth, he emphasized the everlasting stillness of the old city.
